Public relations is a fascinating component of most businesses. Many people view advertising, marketing and public relations to be intertwining fields of study. They assume that marketing and public relations go hand-in-hand, if you have good marketing or advertising, you’ll have good public relations, right? Not really.

Public relations is very different from both marketing and advertising. With advertising or marketing, you pay for services that create an image about your company or business – whether it’s your logo, your marketing materials, your website, advertisements, etc.  Public relations, referred to as PR, is not purchased goodwill or branding. PR is a resource that generates public opinion about your company through news coverage, public events, or community activities.

PR is vital to the success of a company because it establishes confidence and trust of potential clients, at least when done correctly. It opens the channels of communication between a company and the public and establishes a flow of information.

Public relations are an integral part of most businesses and individuals. It’s used not only by companies to communicate with potential customers, but to also communicate with government officials and policy makers. It’s used by non-profit associations to develop awareness of their services and contribute to their fund raising efforts, and of course, politicians use it to attract voters and campaign donations.

A good PR person has connections within the community that serves as a channel for communication. Perhaps they know local reporters, are hooked up with non-profit organizations, have the ear of key community leaders. Qualified PR representatives are constantly on the look out for ways to make sure your company or your individual image is presented well in the public.

Another important function in public relations is to work on the opposite side of the battle. All too often a company or individual may receive negative public attention. That’s when the PR representative really comes into action – they do damage control. They may present a public statement about the event or situation to minimize the negative exposure. Or, they may suggest alternative actions to counteract the negative publicity. For instance, a number of U.S. tobacco companies employ top drawer PR agencies to head their campaigns about the dangers of teenage smoking. While these campaigns hardly stem the negative association of tobacco companies, it does help them gain some modicum of public support.

PR Firms

Public relations can also be involved in information gathering. Many PR firms conduct opinion polling or focus groups to gather information about current public opinion. This information is used to change or refine PR campaigns to influence the public opinion.

Many PR professionals have targeted lists of publications and formulated press releases. It’s merely a matter of plugging in the most current information and disseminating it through their resources. They’ve made the process of public relations almost fool proof.

Public relations is a vital part of the success and health of a business. Your image and branding is so important in the community. Look for opportunities to enhance your public image whenever possible, but don’t be afraid to consult the professionals. Good PR can return an incredible profit to your company long term.
