Starting a Business – Factors to Consider
Starting a business is a big decision. There are a lot of factors to consider, such as the type of business, how much money and time you can invest, and whether you are able to support yourself in the business or need outside source of income.

Can you do this work and continue to be passionate about it?

Your next factor to consider is how you will finance your business. Do you have enough money saved to cover your salary expenses? Do you have money for a facility rental, raw materials, equipment, advertising, and professional services? Most people don’t have money to cover the full business costs, they need some form of assistance – often a small business loan. There are a variety of community groups that can help young entrepreneurs find financing for a business. Look for small business associations or local lenders to get assistance.

Before you establish a business you should have a discussion with an attorney to discuss business structures – sole proprietor, partnerships, corporations, etc. You will also need the assistance of a tax advisor or an accountant. Establishing your company’s financial records is one of the most important steps you can take, and one that could potentially save you a lot of money in the long run.
Next, you need to think about developing a business plan. A business plan is a document that highlights a great deal of information about your business. It’s used to inform potential investors or lenders about your business. A business plan will contain information about your products, your company structure, your company mission, your marketing plans, your advertising efforts and your financial information. There are a number of templates available to prospective businesses to develop a business plan. Again, check with your small business associations to see if they have templates or consulting services available to help you develop your business plan

While it may seem like a costly investment, a good consultant can help you navigate the unexpected waters that come with a new business. You could potentially save yourself a great deal of money with a little investment up front.
